According to data from the Statistical Bulletin of the year 2016 of the National Statistics Office, the prevalence of this disease and its risk factors is evident, where of the total population, 9.3 percent suffer from diabetes; 54.8 percent are overweight; 23.0 percent suffer from obesity and 35.0 percent do not practice any type of physical exercise.

With the aim of supporting the fight to prevent and combat this disease, Mariela Vicini, founder of CEMDOE, thought about the development of a health model that would become a world-class health center, dedicated to the comprehensive treatment for diabetes and its chronic conditions. Three years after the start of its construction, Dominican society has an important legacy for the health system.

“I was worried about seeing all those who suffer from the severe consequences of diabetes, and with the help of a group of reputable doctors we forged the idea of a comprehensive center oriented to the patient and their family”, Mariela Vicini.

In order to learn about good practices in the care of diabetic patients, Mrs. Vicini, accompanied by Dr. Pedro Mena, visited the diabetic standing rooms in Medellín, Buenos Aires, Paris, Germany, Madrid and Barcelona.

The country is taking possession of medical tourism and we as a center are prepared to receive people who are in the surroundings to benefit from a treatment, as well as people who are in their retirement years where we can provide them with effective treatment and at the height of their needs.

Thus, CEMDOE was born as a center of excellence, for the prevention, care and management of chronic diseases, which main objective is the reduction of the human, social and economic impact of diabetes, as well as the complications associated with this disease in the Dominican Republic.
